Are All Cults Bad?

There is always lots of online stuff about the dangers of cults, and recently there’s been a lot about the "The Kabbalah Learning Center" which has its headquarters in Los Angeles.
And if you’re interested in reading about one man’s with the Kabbalah Learning Center The Kabbalah Learning Center in detail, then go read what he has to say.
Many stars and important people attend the talks and also donate huge sums of money to the center.
There is a huge spiritual hunger in the world right now which means that there are more and more seekers of truth.
Madonna supposedly gives millions of dollars to the center but she has tremendous energy and seems very happy.
She supposedly has around 200 million dollars, so if she gives a couple of million a year to the center, so is that worse than tithing 10% (or whatever) of your income every month to other causes, which is what many churches and other religions suggest?
What do you think?
Well two organisations that immediately spring to mind that might be considered cults are the Freemasons and Alcoholics Anonymous.
The Freemasons produced America’s founding fathers and many Presidents.
I believe the following were all Freemasons ..
George Washington
James Monroe
Andrew Jackson
James Polk
James Buchanan
Andrew Johnson
James Garfield
William McKinley
Theodore Roosevelt
Howard Taft
Warren Harding
Franklin Roosevelt
Harry Truman
Gerald Ford
And Alcoholics Anonymous certainly seems to help a great number of people.
* Abraham Lincoln was not a Freemason but he did apply for membership.
The defintion of a cult according to the Cult Information Centre, is that it must have all of the following five characteristics:
1. It uses psychological coercion to recruit, indoctrinate and retain its members.
2. It forms an elitist totalitarian society.
3. Its founder leader is self-appointed, dogmatic, messianic, not accountable and has charisma.
4. It believes ‘the end justifies the means’ in order to solicit funds recruit people.
5. Its wealth does not benefit its members or society.
And it my humble opinion, The Kabbalah Learning Center fits all five premises.
I’d say that “yes” cults are most likely always a bad thing because the cult member, whether willingly or after being deceived, gives up thinking for himself and cedes it to the cult leadership.
And that’s very dangerous, even in a seemingly benign cult.
Well, maybe we should first ask what a cult is.
What makes a cult a cult is not being well accepted or integrated into the society that it’s residing in.
If and when the cult grows in number and becomes more accepted or integrated, it is then no longer considered to be a cult.
Many, or perhaps most people use the world “cult” in a negative way, but as with all things the word only has the meaning that people give it.
Christianity is not a cult today, but it began as one, as probably every other religion did.
Cults will always be bad.
