It seems like most of us take it as a given that the Pilgrim Fathers wore lots of buckles, were deeply religious, hated sex and landed on Plymouth Rock etc. but how much of this stuff is real and how much is myth?
When Did The Pilgrims First Settle?
"Pilgrims" is a name commonly applied to early settlers of the Plymouth Colony in present-day Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States, with the men commonly called Pilgrim Fathers.
The Pilgrims’ leadership came from the religious congregations of Brownist English Dissenters who had fled the volatile political environment in England for the relative calm and tolerance of 16th–17th century Holland in the Netherlands.
Their first English settlement was established in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607 and the second one was established in what is now present-day Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620.
The first settlers, were initially referred to as the Old Comers and later as the Forefathers, and did not become known as the Pilgrim Fathers until two centuries after their arrival.
The above are the facts, but what are some myths about the Pilgrim fathers?
The original Thanksgiving feast took place on the fourth Thursday of November.
The original feast in 1621 occurred sometime between September 21 and November 11.
And unlike our modern holiday, it was three days long.
The event was based on English harvest festivals, which traditionally occurred around the 29th of September.
In 1623 a day of fasting and prayer during a period of drought was changed to one of thanksgiving because the rain came during the prayers.
How About The Buckles? And The Black And White Clothes?
Buckles were not popular until later in the seventeenth century.
And black. and white was normally only worn only on Sunday and formal occasions.
Women typically dressed in red, earthy green, brown, blue, violet, and gray, while men wore clothing in white, beige, black, earthy green, and brown.
Did The Pilgrim Fathers Bring Furniture on the Mayflower?
The only things that the pilgrims took with them on the Mayflower were chests and boxes.
They constructed wooden furniture once they settled in Plymouth.
