Minoxidil [Rogaine] does work and you can buy it over the counter, but there’s a downside to it.

Is there any treatment for hair loss?

It depends on what’s causing the loss.

If a medicine is causing your hair loss, then your doctor may be able to prescribe a different medicine.

Recognizing and treating an infection may help stop the hair loss.

Correcting a hormone imbalance may prevent further hair loss.

Minoxidil (brand name: Rogaine), as already mentioned is available without a prescription and it’s applied to the scalp and is for both men and women.

Finasteride (marketed by Merck under the trademark names Proscar and Propecia), is another treatment that often works, but it’s only available with a prescription. It comes in pills and is only for men.

It can take up to 6 months before you see if either of the above medicines are working.
